Romance scams do not rely on the naivety of victims, but on the patience of scammers and the repetition of proven scripts. Good news: these scripts are few and recognizable. Here are the six most common scenarios and, for each, the response that ends it immediately.

What every scam has in common

They all follow the same curve: create quick intimacy, then manufacture urgency, then ask for something. As soon as an online relationship accelerates these three steps abnormally, doubt is legitimate.

A rule that never has an exception: no sincere person, met online and never seen, will ask you for money. Not for a plane ticket, not for a medical emergency, not for customs fees. Never.

The six scenarios

1. Whirlwind love

The person speaks of love within days, already mentions a shared future. This abnormal pace serves to short-circuit your caution. Response: deliberately slow down. A sincere partner will respect that pace, a scammer will grow impatient.

2. The person always prevented from meeting

Everything is set for a video call or a meeting, then something comes up, again and again. The chronic impossibility of verifying real existence is a major signal. Response: condition the rest on a simple video call. Repeated refusal settles the matter.

3. The financial emergency

After intimacy comes the crisis: a sudden problem, a sum to advance, a promise of repayment. Response: no amount, no exception. Cut the conversation the moment money is mentioned.

4. The fake investment

A modern variant: the person does not ask for money, they offer an opportunity, an investment, a miracle platform. Response: a relationship and financial advice never mix with a stranger. Decline and report.

5. Image blackmail

After obtaining intimate photos, the scammer threatens to share them. Response: never pay, keep the evidence, report and block. Giving in does not stop blackmail, it feeds it.

6. Moving the conversation off-platform

Very early, the person insists on leaving the app for a private messenger. Off the platform, there is no more moderation or protection. Response: keep the conversation on the app as long as trust is not established.

Staying on the app is not a constraint, it is a shield. Moderation, reporting and blocking only exist there. That is also why verified profiles change the game.

The right reflex when in doubt

Report, block, and feel no shame. Reporting also protects the next person. To understand how the platform reduces these risks upstream, read our article on profile verification.

FAQ

How do I tell ordinary caution from a real scam?

Look at the combination: intimacy too fast, impossibility of meeting, and a request of some kind. A single element can be explained, the three together almost never.

I already sent money, what should I do?

Stop any further payment, keep the exchanges, report the person on the app and, depending on the amount, to the authorities. The most important thing is to stop immediately, without guilt.

Do verified profiles remove all risk?

They strongly reduce the risk of fake profiles, but your vigilance about intentions stays essential. Verification confirms identity, not good faith.
